Alita: Battle Angel was... fun!
As someone who has never read the manga and has no prior knowledge of this character the film stands on its own merits, simply put, it was a blast. The special effects and overall visual presentation of the film are exquisite, and you can tell the world and Alita herself were created with care and exception attention to detail. The people making this film knew how important skirting the edge of the uncanny valley was, and I'd say they pulled it off.
Action scenes are plentiful and surprisingly brutal for a PG-13 film whose plot is basically a teen drama. The choreography is excellent, and they manage to make Alita appear simultaneously powerful and vulnerable, maintaining tension many comic adaptations lack.
The plot as previously mentioned is easily the weakest aspect of the film with mediocre, though largely inoffensive writing, a predictable sequence of events and myriad character arcs that due to their brevity, and some pretty weak onscreen chemistry, largely feel unearned. The film is two hours long and manages to feel short as the ending feels more like the end of a second act than a conclusion.
7/10 More flash than brains.
