Captain Marvel was...fine.
In some ways it feels like a regression back to the first phase of the MCU, following many of the same story beats we've seen before. The films biggest issue is a scattershot presentation that feels like it can't decide what it wants to be, 90's nostalgia fest with Nick Fury comic relief or a massive space drama with galaxies at stake. The fight scenes, save one, aren't particularly memorable, photon blasting everything in sight kind of becomes a blur.
Carol Danvers arc is solid, even inspiring, but the way it's presented sucks the life out of it, rather than seeing a real progression we're fed flashbacks and exposition that culminate in a pretty typical finale that focuses on how Danver’s has overcome her internal conflict more than the actual villain who is just a representation of this (and patriarchy because of course).
I wish the way they chose to present this was handled better because I think it ultimately made Brie Larson play a far less compelling version of this character than she's capable of. Who knows, maybe things will be different in Endgame.
For all my gripes, the movie is still fun overall with a fair amount of laughs and a strong supporting cast, especially Samuel L. Jackson. Ben Mendelson's character, Talos, gave life to a lot of scenes that would’ve otherwise felt like a chore. The movie also really wants to be an inspirational story for little girls who get told they're not good enough, and not only is that commendable but, I think it succeeds in that respect.
6/10 Decent
