Knives Out Review

Knives Out was...a ton of fun!

Seriously, this is one of the best films in theaters right now and I feel like no one is talking about it. Everything about this movie is bench-made with great care.

The humor is razor-sharp and consistently got laughs out of the whole theater. The set design is subtly complex, so many little details to appreciate about the house that become evident as the film progresses. The characters and performances are excellent for the most part, of particular note: Chris Evans as Ransom, Michael Shannon as Walt & Daniel Craig as Blanc were standouts to me, though Ana de Armas does a great job in the lead role as well.

This is such a well-written knot of a plot that slowly gets untangled as the film progresses. You'll think you're getting ahead of it for a few scenes and it'll drop a bombshell that makes you reconsider your previous conclusions. A fun and surprisingly incisive murder mystery that explores themes of family, greed, racism in several forms.

The dialogue is sharp, witty and perfectly written for the cast Johnson has assembled, though I think it occasionally strays into needless unsubtly at a few points in the name of being topical.

The film is exquisitely paced using every second of its runtime to great effect, I was never bored or insulted by over-explanation. The final recounting of events by Craig's Blanc is one of the best scenes in the film.

To cut to the chase, this is a thoroughly enjoyable ride from start to finish, easily the type of film I could see being re-watched in living rooms for years to come.

9/10 Take a stab at it.
