Marriage Story Review

Marriage Story was...incredible.

Noah Baumbach is an extremely well-regarded writer and this films script is a shining example as to why. The way he develops characters and their relationships always manages to feel fresh and organic rather than falling into the generic outlines used by so many films these days. He weaves the story of this couple's separation and eventual divorce in a way that doesn't ever feel like it's taking a side or coming from a dark place.

The film tackles divorce as a mutual tragedy, a loss for both sides no matter how it's sliced, a loss that threatens to have casualties other than the relationship itself. I was thoroughly moved by how the film handled these themes and how well these characters were performed by costars Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson who are supported by a dynamite cast of characters. The film never strays too far into sentimentality, bitterness, or nihilism, always returning to its core message of life after metaphorical death.

Marriage Story is easily one of the best films of 2019 and one that will stay with you long after it's over.
