Roma Review

Writer's picture: James CassarinoJames Cassarino

Roma was... phenomenal.

The film captures the story of a young housekeeper in 1970's Mexico City, the story itself is vulnerable, intimate, and earnest in a way that seems rare nowadays, it links this story with a setting that has its own progression of events as time passes. This serves to enhance the sense of scale and brings the city to life in a way that few films manage to pull off.

The film is also absolutely stunning, every shot in this film feels purposeful and meticulous. There is an interesting contrast between the cramped suffocating shots in the house with huge panoramic shots outside and the use of deep focus to give shots dimension.

Roma is a visual treat that tells a very potent story in a unique and engaging way. It's more than we probably deserve as an audience, but we got it anyway, which considering the film's message, feels apt.

10/10 Easily one of the best films of 2018
