Shazam was... a great time!

Feeling more like Sam Raimi's Spiderman than more recent superhero fare Shazam combines the camp of those earlier films, with the goofy fun of Marvel, and a busload of heart, to give us one of DC's stronger entry's in the modern superhero scene.
Zachary Levi as Shazam and Jack Dylan Grazer as Billy Batson have great onscreen chemistry backed by clever writing and an endearing supporting cast. Shazam does fall prey to the superhero formula towards the third act with a one-dimensional villain played by Mark Strong who does his best with what he's given. The film also felt overlong with both the opening and finale dragging a bit. But the chewy nougat center of the film is great, consistently great humor and an unexpected earnestness that delivers the core message to great effect.
7/10 Go see it or risk a suitcase wedgie.
P.S. For those that love Easter eggs, there are a few great ones here.
