Suicide Squad was… not good.
Like its predecessor Batman v. Superman, Suicide Squad tries to combine several movies into one, giving us a jumbled mess. Unlike its predecessor, Suicide Squad still manages to be slightly entertaining despite this fact. Will Smith does what he can playing Deadshot a character that they seemingly wrote to just be Will Smith. Margo Robbie turns in an amusing if somewhat one-dimensional performance as Harley Quinn, and everyone else is just kind of there with the exception of Viola Davis who manages to be the most menacing individual on screen despite being surrounded by supposedly hardened criminals.
The editing here is a big culprit when it comes to making this movie more incomprehensible, there’s so many quick cuts and weird scene transitions that don’t flow that I was getting a headache watching this.
The tone gets put through the blender thanks to the frankenplot and the pop music soundtrack is annoyingly distracting and off-putting. The action scenes are occasionally passable an occasionally a dull chore. The film also seems to be under the impression it carries far more emotional weight than it does with long drawn out moments that want to be impactful but have been ineffectively set up and fall flat. Despite all this, the movie still manages to retain some charm and Harley and Deadshot have a few lines that actually work.
Overall the film isn’t very good at all, it wants to be an edgy, contemplative story about finding the humanity in these supposedly evil characters, but it’s so wrapped up in it’s over the top style and being edgy that the few times it tries to have genuine character moments they feel completely out of place.
3/10 No squad goals here.
