The Killing of a Sacred Deer was… striking.
This feels like something only Yorgos Lanthimos could have made. Much like the beginning of The Lobster and to some degree Dogtooth, he goes for this really deadpan aesthetic that slowly wears away as the events of the film push the characters beyond their limits. Like anything Lanthimos makes, the film has a twisted sense of humor, kind of like it’s toying with the audience as much as it is the characters. At its core the film is a revenge thriller but with the added wrinkle that the audience isn’t meant to revel in the revenge, it explores themes of family, trust, love, selfishness, and others.
This is definitely a feel bad movie. Don't expect catharsis from the ending. Lanthimos enjoys poking his viewers with uncomfortable insights and perverse relationships. I definitely enjoyed this less than his previous work but it’s still an interesting and well-made film with plenty of depth to explore.
8/10 Who’s really the bad guy?
