Us was... pretty good.
Coming off the incredible hype for anything Jordan Peele that Get Out left in its wake, Us might feel like a letdown to some. It's conceptually weaker than Get Out in almost every respect. It's also somehow got a more complicated premise despite feeling like the simpler of the two, the horror is more visceral and less cerebral than Get Out but I had a hard time finding the movie particularly scary, especially after the first hour of build-up breaks and things start to get crazy. That first hour though builds tension so well that it makes the underwhelming reveal still solidly entertaining.
The reveal just didn't shock me like I think it was intended to and the cavalcade of chaotic violence that follows just feels...expected. Despite a somewhat underwhelming delivery on a promising extended metaphor, the film is otherwise exceptionally well made, the acting is phenomenal, particularly Lupita Nyong'o in both roles, as well as Winston Duke who provides welcome comic relief to the production. Even the children give reasonably convincing performances.
The sound design is another stand out that really helps elevate the clunky tedium of the final act. There's plenty of slashy hacky fun for the bloodthirsty filmgoer as well, though for Peele doesn't linger on gore overmuch, focusing more on mass devastation and his committed metaphor.
Overall, I think it was a better concept than a movie, but Us is still diverting enough for an enjoyable night out.
7/10 Run from the whole family
