Widows was…intense.
Widows isn't really a heist movie, there's a heist in the movie but the film is far more interested in exploring the depths of its characters than in putting together a clever chain of events like you might expect from the Ocean's series. That's not to say those elements don't exist but they are far from the most compelling aspects of the film.
Like all of Steve McQueen's previous films his direction here is thoughtful, penetrating, and uncompromising. The camera tends to linger on the sudden bursts of violence, you aren't allowed to get the thrill without feeling the ensuing horror, characters motivations and emotional states are strongly established and explored, people aren't good or bad, they are uncomfortably complicated. This might read more like an essay intro than a review but that's kind of the point. This isn't your popcorn chomping action heavy stylized heist film. This is something deeper, something worth your time and careful consideration. This is something special.
